Building Permits

Permits are required for new construction, additions, accessory buildings, demolition, moving structures, fences, porches, decks, signs and swimming pools.  

A diagram of your property is required for any permit.

Most permits are $15 and are ready within a week or so.  A penalty will be charged if you begin a project before getting a permit.

Bicycles/Skates/Skateboards

To protect our citizens shopping at our local businesses an ordinance is in effect prohibiting the use of bicycles, skateboards, in-line skates and scooter on the sidewalks in the downtown area.  These items may be pushed or carried in this area, Please look for the posted signs.

 

Storm/Ground Water Ordinance #1990-3

Under ordinance #1990-3 the Town of Greentown prohibits, either directly or indirectly, any storm water, or surface water, ground water, roof runoff, sub-surface drains, sump-pumps, etc, to be discharged into any sanitary sewers.  You will be required to remove such drainage from the collection system.  If violations are not corrected a penalty of $50.00 per month can be assessed.

Hazardous Materials

To dispose of hazardous materials such as common household chemicals, oil, fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, paint, electronic equipment, tires etc. call Howard County Recycling District,4104 Cartwright Dr. , Kokomo  at 456-2274

 

Severe Weather/Outdoor Warning Siren

The severe weather/outdoor warning siren will be activated in the case of:

1. A Tornado or severe weather warning issued for our area

2. Any threat situation to the Town of Greentown

3. Any other Natural or Man-Made Disaster

The siren will continue to cycle the siren warning until the threat is over.

There will not be an All Clear signal.

Testing is done:

1. Every Friday @ 1:00 P.M. from March thru September

2. The First Friday @ 1:00 P.M. during October – February

3. During Statewide National Weather Service Tests

The test is cycled for about 1 minute.

 

Rules for Pickup of Brush and Leaves

The Town will only pick up MINOR tree trimmings unless it is storm related.

Brush must be:

1. Cut up in 5 ft or less lengths

2. Stacked as close to the street as possible with cut end toward the street but not in the street, alley or sidewalk.

3. Anything with thorns must be tied with 2 or more pieces of twine.

All materials to be picked up must be able to be loaded easily onto our truck by one person.

No stumps, whole trees, whole shrubs, whole bushes, brush form fence rows or wooded areas, grass clippings, yard or garden waste will be picked up. The above items may be taken to Yard Waste Recycling Center, 1130 S. Dixon Road, Kokomo For more information call 456-2274

Leaves MUST BE bagged in Paper Bio Degradable Bags given out at the Utility Office in early Spring and Fall.  These bags are for leaves only.

No burning of leaves is permitted in the street.
